Course Overview
Delve into the Renaissance world of dynamic drawing practices and discover the creative depth of historical craft. On this yearlong online drawing apprenticeship course you will discover the artistic dynamism of Renaissance drawing by exploring approaches to sketching, sustained drawing and progressing from design process into painting. You will use the page as a surface of creative exploration and enquiry in covering pages with numerous drawings of various subjects such as heads, figures, plants and animals. Learning approaches to drawing in multimedia will allow you to make a range of drawings which show your understanding of form, movement, tension, and tone. The techniques you learn will be demonstrated in close detail with each step of the drawing process explained so that you learn how striking visual effects are achieved.
The course follows historical workshop traditions and practices, transporting you to the world in which Renaissance artists developed their artistic vision and conjured ideas for their own work from drawing into painting. While you develop your artistic skills you will learn why artists in the Renaissance worked in the manner they did and the meaning of their practices within the historical culture of their time. The practices you will learn and explore will take you from drawing into painting, building on the basic methodology and process of Renaissance drawing to develop new skills in Renaissance painting.

- How to develop both concise and direct sketches and finely modelled drawings and designs.
- How to draw with multimedia to achieve bold and striking effects as well as learning to use pen
- How to prepare canvas for painting and then paint on it
- How to plan, design and paint a portrait
- How to develop compositions with fill linear and chiaroscuro techniques
Course Schedule
Term 1 – The Dynamic Study Sheet: from drawing into painting
In this ten-week term you will explore the full potential of Renaissance multimedia drawing techniques on toned paper. You will draw various forms from heads in various positions, body parts, figures, landscapes, animals and buildings. The term will conclude with a sustained painted drapery study on canvas.
Term 2 – The Portrait: drawn likeness and painted ideal
In this tern-week term we focus on creating a set of finished portrait drawings and studies of the facial features and hands. We will then work on a painted portrait using Renaissance painting techniques in oil. We will explore the symbolic nature of portraiture in Renaissance Florence and imbue our work with meaning using landscape and other naturalistic elements.
Term 3 – Drama and Narrative: pen and ink drawing into painting a scene
In this ten-week term you will study Renaissance pen and ink drawing techniques and develop skills in more direct spontaneous drawing. You will develop skill sin the boldest form of Renaissance drawing where the form is build up with tone solely in hatching with the white of the paper providing the lights. We will then work on a compositional design which will then be worked into a cartoon for a painting.
