Overview
Discover the portrait painting process of the Renaissance masters in this course which decodes and reconstructs their approach layer by layer. In these six live, online classes you will learn and apply the historical method of painting of artists such as Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. By understanding the principles of each layer of a Renaissance painting and the correct way to apply the materials you will be able to take part in recreating and reviving the world of Renaissance art. This course will teach you the principles of oil painting which are essential for creating successful and technically stable work in oil on canvas or panel. The rules of traditional oil painting which are no longer widely understood or taught are the central lessons of this course and form the structure of the work you will complete from the conception of your design to the final glazes of colour. On this course you will create one sustained portrait painting in oils over the six live, guided classes.
You Will Learn:
- The historical craft of oil painting and the essential rules of painting
- The Renaissance masters’ palette for each layer of the painting from start to finish
- How to paint a monochromatic underpainting over the underdrawing
- The types of brushwork applied in Renaissance painting
- To use simple historical mediums to manipulate the transparency and drying qualities of oil paint

Suitability
No prior painting experience required but it is recommended that you have a grounding in drawing before taking this course
