Uncover the essentials of how Renaissance artists drew the head to transform your drawing abilities and learn the foundational elements of their process. These six live, online drawing classes show you how Renaissance artists drew each part of the human head and their process for executing a complete drawing. Understanding each stage of how Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael drew the head will enable you to start drawing confidently with the knowledge of an authentic methodology and the principles which underpin it. This course breaks down and demystifies the early stages of Renaissance artistic training by enabling you to understand the design of the features while becoming familiar fundamental aspects of Renaissance drawing.

You will Learn:

  • The most foundational aspects of Renaissance drawing
  • How Renaissance artists begun their training
  • How Renaissance artists applied line and tone
  • How draw the linear design of each of the features from different angles
  • How to shade linear drawings effectively with hatching
  • The process of drawing the whole head from various angles

Class 1 – The Very First Steps: How Renaissance Artists Started Drawing

Class 2 – The Design of the Eye

Class 3 – The Designs of Noses and Mouths

Class 4 – The Design of the Ear and How to Draw Hair

Class 5 – The Profile

Class 6 – The Design and Proportions of the Head


This course is ideal for anyone seeking to learn how the Renaissance masters drew the human head and the theory they applied. The course will introduce historical methods of drawing from the Renaissance to both artists who are starting and those with experience. If you are a beginner, this course will get you started with a good foundation in drawing the head, and if you have drawn a lot already it will give you a new approach which is rooted in traditional craft. Each drawing exercise is not at a high level of difficulty and will be accessible to those with little experience.

You will Need:

  • Pencils (HB recommended) or Silverpoint
  • Paper (White or Off-White, if using silverpoint paper must be prepared with a ground)
